Wisdom From My New Jamaican Friend 3857

Yeah Mon

My wife and I had the great opportunity to float down the Martha Brae River on a bamboo float recently, while in Jamaica. This was truly one of my coolest life experiences. The bamboo rafts are approximately 20 feet long and are operated by local Jamaicans. The river is very slow moving and the entire trip took about 1 hour and 45 minutes. With a six-pack of Red Stripe beer on ice, we made our way down the river. Our captain, Danny, was the owner and operator of the raft we chose.

Danny’s father captained a raft for 30 years, and introduced Danny to the business. It was cool to see how much pride and ownership Danny took in his raft and small business.  He took the time to describe to us exactly how he made the raft, and what he does everyday to maintain it. It was very important to him that we knew he owned his own business, and he did not work for anyone else.

Danny was a VERY cool guy and we will definitely be back to see him on our next trip. Every other word was YEAH MON or NO MON. He taught us the history and culture of his small river2inwatercommunity, along with the ‘legends’ of the Martha Brae. Folklore has it that if you jump in the crystal clear river and swim around it makes you 10 years younger, adding 10 years to your life! This was all the motivation I needed to take a swim in the cool, clear water…

No Problems, Only Situations

Danny taught me one of my most valuable life lessons that day. He said there are NO problems, only situations. He explained that we should look at challenges as situations, NOT problems. What a great new way to approach life!

Everything is a matter of perspective. It’s not what happens to us that matters, but rather how we deal with what happens to us. Have you ever heard the phrase “in time, this too shall pass?” It is very true.

So, the next time you face one of life’s little annoying challenges, look at is as a situation, not a problem. That small mental shift can make a big difference in how we deal with life.

Danny and Me

If you ever find yourself in the Trelawny Parish on the north coast of Jamaica, near Falmouth, go see Danny and take a relaxing ride down the Martha Brae River. And remember, “there are no problems, only situations.”

Wishing you all the success you will allow yourself to have!
