A Penny or 10 Million Dollars? 5007

Many years ago, as I was walking through a parking lot on a VERY hot summer day in Austin Texas, my good friend and mentor, Wayne Holbrook stopped to pick up a penny. Yes, a penny!  This wasn’t even a shinny penny, and I’m not even sure if it was even facing “heads-up.” It was a dirty, grimy penny, and not something I would ever want to touch.

“What the hell are you doing Holbrook?” I said, realizing he was picking up a penny from the dirty ground. “It’s a penny; do you need a penny that bad?”  It was then and there, on that hot summer day, that I learned the best lesson of my life. It is a lesson I will NEVER forget. In fact, it is a lesson that has stopped me from ever walking past any change on the ground ever again- penny or not.

“The sub-conscious mind doesn’t know the difference between a penny and $10 Million dollars,” Wayne responded. “All the mind knows is that its money and you are walking past it, so it must not be all that important to you.”

Wow! It was the most profound thing I had ever heard in my life. Think about it, what kind of signals are we sending our sub-conscious mind on a daily basis? Are they positive or negative? It has been said, focus on what you WANT, not what you DON’T WANT.

George Zalucki addresses the power our mind has over our success in Profile of a Champion and The Awesome Power of The Mind. He teaches us that we produce what we focus on the most. In fact, he points out that everything you see around you, absolutely everything, was once only a thought in someone’s mind. In other words, “thoughts are things.”  You must first be able to imagine the life you want, before you can create the life you want.

I had a discussion with a gentleman named Earl Shaw very early in my career about attitude. I told him, if I were him and already making over a million dollars per year, it would be easy to have a great attitude. He quickly replied that it doesn’t happen in that order. You must FIRST have the right attitude before you can make the money. In other words, you must believe you are a millionaire before you become a millionaire. Remember, the conscious mind must always prove what the sub-conscious mind believes to be true.

So, be careful what you think about, and NEVER walk past a penny again. It could very well cost you $10 million dollars or more!

Wishing you all the success you will allow yourself to have!

Jake
